On the other hand, I've actually taken projects with unmerged pull requests, and pulled them into my own repo to use the new functionality/bug fixes. So they aren't necessarily just sitting there uselessly.


It might be worth commenting to that effect on the pull request. It'd at least provide a morale boost to the author of the request; and showing that someone out there is already using the changes might even make the maintainer more likely to accept them.
