If this was a MITM attack what would have been the correct route of action? Use a VPN?

Unbound + DNSSEC should be able to counter-measure this. That said, I'm not sure you'll be able to connect to a given IP if it's blocked. In this case you'll need a proxy/VPN/Anonymizer (Tor/I2P)
